Sang Whang was a talented inventor, convinced that he could change the world. During his studies on alkaline water, he invented the AlkaBest Ionizer.

At the age of 55, Sang Whang was diagnosed with high blood pressure, and he was prescribed a blood pressure medicine to take for the rest of his life. He did not like the idea of taking a medicine for the rest of his life, especially since there were so many unknown side-effects of prescription medicine. One of his friends told him that a water ionizer could help with high blood pressure, although she did not know why. In only six weeks, he no longer needed to take blood pressure pills. Intrigued by this phenomenon, Sang Whang began to investigate the benefits of alkaline water. More of his study on alkaline water can be found in the Science and Health series.

Sang Whang stated many times in his work that an ionizer was a good way to get alkaline water, and over time he began using more sophisticated models. Eventually, he had the idea for his own ionizer. Since most other ionizers did not filter water (or filtered it poorly), he wanted to create one that would ionize the water while adequately filtering it. Working with a man by the name of Michael Pedersen and the company Sanuslife, he was able to create such an ionizer. Michael Pedersen helped to create filters known as AQUASPACE filters, which are similar to the water filters used by NASA.

The collaboration between Sang Whang and Michael Pedersen brought together AQUASPACE filtration technology — similar to filters developed for NASA — with Sang Whang’s alkaline water research. The result was an ionizer designed to both filter and alkalize water effectively.
